Information
Edward Ardizzone began his career as an artist in 1927, becoming known to the public through a series of one man shows, his work as an official war artist in the Second World War and as an illustrator of books by other writers. It is, however, as a writer and illustrator of children’s books, in which Kentish scenes often figured, that many people remember him. ‘Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain’, written for his own children and published in 1936, featured the area around Kingsdown, near Deal, where his brother had a house, and where he later also bought a house. Several other equally popular ‘Tim’ books followed after the war. In 1972 he and his wife retired to 5 Vine Cottages, Rodmersham Green. The village is depicted in some of the books he illustrated for the poet James Reeves (1903-78) who produced many works for children. Edward Ardizzone died at Rodmersham Green and is buried in the churchyard of St. Nicholas, Rodmersham.
