Information
In August 1836, at age 15, Charles Baudelaire attended a dinner thrown at Gravelines by the maire of the town. The event was held in the street which now bears the name of Baudelaire’s father-in-law, M. le général Aupick himself born in the town. It was thanks to his father-in-law, who raised the orphaned Charles from age 4, that Baudelaire met the illustrious literary figure Alphonse de Lamartine. It was perhaps at this period that Baudelaire himself realised that his life would be forever linked to literature.
