Clodd, Edward

(1840 -1930)

Information

An early admirer of Darwin and an enthusiastic user of free libraries and lectures, Clodd was able to make his self-taught knowledge of religious and scientific issues of the day accessible to a wide readership in works such as ‘The Childhood of the World', ‘Jesus of Nazareth' and ‘The Story of Creation’.He was born in Margate, where his father captained a brig which traded between Margate and the north. The family lived in Queen Street and then moved to Suffolk while Clodd was still a small child. He continued to live at Aldeburgh, where he entertained such prominent Victorians as Thomas Hardy, T.H.Huxley and Leslie Stephen.
