Information
When the stay making business which he had set up in Sandwich failed, Paine moved with his pregnant young wife of less than a year to Margate in the spring of 1760. Here she and the baby died during the premature delivery. The future radical author of ‘Common Sense’ (1776), ‘The Rights of Man’(1791) and ‘The Age of Reason’ (1794) soon moved away to embark on the varied career which would take him to the turbulent events of revolutionary America and France; he hardly ever referred to that painful early episode again.
