Rubrouck, Guillaume

Information

Guillaume de Rubrouck was born in the village of Rubrouck. As a fransciscan monk he was sent by Louis IX to Mongolia. In May 1252 he travelled from Constantinople to Qaraqorum where he met up with the Magoukhan Khan in an unsucessful attempt to become an ally of his so as to be able to protect Asian Christians against Muslims and obtain permisson to evangelise the Mongolians. He returned to France in 1254 and proceeded to publish his travel notes. Rubrouck spoke Flemish as a child, studied in Latin and also spoke French. In May 1996 a museum dedicated to the monk and his expedition to Mongolia was opened in Rubrouck. The village has also been twinned with the Mongolian town of Bulgan since July 1994.
