Information
By 1788 the greatest successes of Sheridan’s theatrical life – ‘The Rivals’ (1770), ‘The School for Scandal’ (1777) and ‘the Critic’ (1779) – were behind him and he had embarked on his long wished –for career in politics, becoming known as a brilliant orator and a confidant of the royal circle. On 12th August he was summoned to his father’s bedside in Margate, to find him ‘ in a melancholy situation’. He had been on his way from Dublin to Lisbon for the sake of his health. After his death two days later, his son made arrangements for him to be buried in the north aisle of St. Peter’s Church , Broadstairs, where a plaque commemorates him.
