Swaen, Michel

(1654 -1707)

 


Information

Born at Dunkerque on 20th January 1654, in the place du Marché au Poisson, Swaen spent his entire childhood there. In 1678 he set himself up as a surgeon in the rue de l’Amiral Ronarc’h (formerly rue Notre Dame). As a friend of Dominique de Jonghe he was a member of the Dunkerque chamber of rhetoric, whose president he became in 1687. In this role he produced many poems for official occasions. He was also the author of a mystery and some tragedies written in Flemish, as well as the translator of Corneille’s ‘Le Cid’ and Campistron’s ‘Andronic’. He died at Dunkerque on 3rd May 1707.
