Trevisa, John

(1326 -1412)

Information

Trevisa is known largely for his translations, which show an early English treatment of secular works. He translated Higden’s universal history ‘Polychronicon’ (1387), adding an introduction and a continuation, part of which has become notable as an account of the state of the English language at that time. In those days Thanet was still separated from the rest of Kent by the rivers Wantsum and Stour.

Quotations

Thanatos, that is Tenet, and is an ilond bysides Kent, and hath that name Tanatos of deth of serpentes, for there beeth none, and the erthe thereof sleeth sepentes i-bore in to other londes. There is nobil corn lond and fruytful; me troweth that that ilond was i-halowed and i-blessed of Seynt Austyn, the firste doctour of Englische men; for there he aryued first.
