Wilde, Oscar

(1856 -1900)

Information

Many years after his first visit there, and with the sobering experience of prison behind him, Wilde was still able to write a tongue-in-cheek comment in March 1898 to a friend who had been to stay in Margate. Wilde’s brief acquaintance with the town derived from a lecture he gave there in July 1883.

Quotations

I am very glad you went to Margate, which, I believe, is the nom-de-plume of Ramsgate. It is a nice quiet spot not vulgarised by crowds of literary people.
